Thanks for the comments, everyone. In case you are wondering, no, this is not going to be continued, at least not by me. John may submit this elsewhere with a different artist, but I will not be involved in it. I'm working on Crowfeathers, and possibly a new military themed comic written by a soldier.

This is an excellent comic! It's a shame that there are those who haven't a clue about the difference between jpeg, bitmap, GIFF, TIFF and PNG or about the various quirks each file type has. As far as the scope of the story, its basis is really rather simple and quite exquisitely so. Demons show up, inform key of his importance and the nexus, introduce element of danger. It's not difficult at all!

That has me VERY excited.

Congrats DitC team on the closest competition yet, and for just making a Great comic. I will follow it wherever it goes, and can't wait until until your next submission. (Until then, I suppose I will have to be content with Crow Feathers and Mr. Zakours various novels that I have yet to read.)

This is a clever idea, and I appreciate the humor of it. The Bull looking for mutton sort of confused me, but I considered it to be representative of something other than simply a bull. The art reminds me a bit of anime. The only real concern I have is that the kids may not be "normal" representative of most kids.. After all, how many kids are black belts (and there are different levels of black belts, as I understand it).. Still, looks like it is going to be a fun series.

If you don't like the product, why don't you just not read it, and move on? If I'm standing in line to buy a vanilla ice cream cone, I don't want someone standing next to the counter telling me vanilla is boring and I shouldn't eat it. I'd agree with the whole age thing, but I suppose I am a bit biased. Anywho, alot of people have complained over and over again about the digital colouring. the artist has taken the criticism and improved for future updates, evidenced by the bonus content that's been posted (especially that great sky pic). People talk about how the writing uses cliches, (and I personally don't see how use of ninjas is a cliche at all), and how its not that serious, but that's the point- it's a light, enjoyable read, that has a very deep world behind it- it's not as contemplative as Watchmen, but I'd argue it's just as entertaining, just in a differant way.

My rambling is done for the evening.

Oh, but johnzakour, one quick thing-
"Folks, the only thing you accomplish by putting negative comments on the board of a comic you don't like is to boost the score of that comic."
shhhhhh you're not supposed to tell them that.

As a member of the manga buying public as well as the comic buying public I'd like to say this comic doesn't appeal to me. Its the worst of both worlds in my opinion. It has awful colors, dialog, anatomy, pacing and its boring. The artist cannot depict movement and shows an utter lack of dynamism. Also It uses cheesy manga cues ie. sweatdrop, faces without noses, etc. which I think will and should alienate a lot of viewers. "SD" is an easy cop-out and utterly devoid of creativity. What I want to know is where are all these votes coming from? This definitely isn't #2 material.

Additionally the competitors are smarmy douchebags in nearly every comment they post. I wouldn't usually leave such a prickly comment but I feel incited.

I wouldn't discount Sixtem's comment for his age. As far as I know, a large % of comic sales come from people that are 18 and under. Probably more so with the manga buying public, an audience that this comic will most likely appeal to. If you are looking to have a career in comics, know that you are going to get criticized. It looks unprofessional on your part to not accept it, even if you think the person doesn't know what they're talking about.

And yeah, discount my comment for my age if you like. I would hope that being raised on comics by my father since I was 5, I would have gotten a good taste of what I do or do not like to see in comics. As someone who spends a lot on comics and manga every month, I am part of your audience even though I'm not 30 years old.

Not trying to get totally off topic or anything, I'm not by any means flaming you. I just wanted to bring up a point I thought was worth thinking about.

Sixtem: Ah, gotcha. I was having that difficulty myself when reading Pieces of Eden - in that case, it almost seemed like the art and writing were contradicting each other on some small details.
Individually, they worked - together, it was disharmonious to me. I guess that must be how you feel about this one, even though I don't see it myself.
I wasn't trying to wave the "artist" title around to give myself more authority on the subject - just trying to show that I generally approach things from a visual perspective, as opposed to a literary one (as I would expect from someone who decided to label themselves as a "writer").

@ JSLoomis: What I meant was that there was no harmony between the art and the writing. It seemed the art was relying on the dialogue. I'm not saying it should be all visual and no speech, I'm just saying that there should be a bit more compromise with the storytelling.
And I'm an artist too. Waving that title around is pointless and doesn't make someone more qualified in a matter of opinion.
It seems most of the comments on this site seem to forget this is all opinion and taste. Everything seems to be taken a bit too personally.

"just drew pictures for dialogue you wrote up"

Hmm... unless you are working Marvel style, that generally IS how comics are created. Personally, I've never been a big fan the Todd McFarlane technique of drawing up pages, shuffling them around and then writing in the dialogue to make it fit together. (That's what he said in an interview about how he did the Spawn comic series)
I suppose either method is technically viable (as the end result is the same - words and pictures married together to tell a story) but in my mind the art should serve the story - not the other way around. (Odd perhaps, since I'm an artist)

sixtem says:

I felt the story was far too large for the page limit.
The details of a world and a plot I didn't have time to care about were pitched at me with rapid speed.
The characters had personalities, but they weren't expanded on and they felt incredibly shallow, especially the main character.
Dialogue should be succinct and to the point, and this fell far short of the mark.
The majority of your page shouldn't be filled with speech bubbles, try using the visual aspect of the medium for plot exposition and development.
Art and writing should work together, and it seems you just drew pictures for dialogue you wrote up.
Original and innovative? This comic is neither of these.
The ideas may not have been done EXACTLY before, but the lackluster delivery and overly direct storytelling made them come across and unimaginative and uninteresting.
The character designs are dull(c'mon, ninjas and extradimensional beings with as much imagination as a Disney villain?).
And lastly, the art. Your anatomy was fine, and while your art was overly anime and manga inspired with little personal touch, it was decent. However, your digital and coloring skills are complete rubbish. The white lines between the ninja's linework and colors alone showed that you don't know how to color.
Let alone that, but you also used only overly saturated, absolute value flats that clashed (lack of any knowledge of color theory) and no highlights or shadows to try and make up for it.
The lines didn't even have good quality or ANY variation in line weight.
Even ignoring my personal distaste of the art, story, and overall comic, the skill shown through this entry is completely amateur. Keep practicing because it's obvious you have no idea what you're doing.

Sky and Rain meet the fabulous, six-armed demon Amaesta and her mutton loving, minotaur-like aid, Norpee. Amaesta reveals to Sky that by no means are they here to hurt them; in fact, they are here to help! It turns out that the closet in Rain's room (which used to be Sky's room) is a nexus from the demon’s world into our world. In order for a demon to enter or leave our world, either Sky or Rain must open the closet door. Therefore, Amaesta has concluded that both Sky and Rain are very important! She believes Sky especially has a great destiny and therefore needs to be protected. Sky wants to know, "protected from who?" Amaesta points out that many humans and “others” would be interested in the closet as a source of power, and the two kids could be in grave danger. Sky realizes that if all this is going to work out in a way that doesn't involve grievous harm to himself or his sister, he’s going to have to cooperate with the demons, whether he trusts them or not.
