Nestled deep in space is the vast galaxy of Salem-300. Home to the famous space witches, ethereal women gifted with staggering, powers, who explore the twisted corridors of space at light speed on their inter-dimensional broomsticks. We follow Ailith, a naive, newly awakened witch who has a very blurred, distant past, but attracts attention from the rest of the Space Witches due to her unprecedented magical skills. After learning the basics in controlling her powers and receiving her sacred orbs and broomstick,Ailith traverses from planet to planet, frequently running into other space witches in the pursuit of Artifacts, rare, ancient relics and crystals, from days long gone, which bestow new and unique powers and abilities to their holder. With the help of her trusty, loudmouth, artifact detecting computer M.E.O.W, encounters with mysterious strangers, controlling her newly emerging magical abilities, as well as unraveling her indiscernible past, Ailith sets forth on a grand mission to become the greatest witch in all the universe.
Witch Phase takes the original image of a witch and turns it on it's head as we head into space with Ailith and see how magic and science collide, the witches broomsticks are now inter-dimensional devices which with a spell can transform into a spaceship, and their spells can level a planet, not to mention a witches sidekick, a black cat, is now a highly sophisticated computer program capable of sensing danger and analyzing properties.

Hi Bryan,
Sorry it took to almost the end of the competition to post ths, but I had to find it again. Please check out this link from Del Rey:

When I see your art I think this publisher may be a good fit for you. I wish you the best!
I love the simplicity here...cheers!!!
Great stuff here. Art alone should have this ranked a little higher. Too bad the readers here are more into the "Heavy Metal" not "Shonen Jump" type of comics.

a great Comic and love your fanart to!
I like a lot of the elements - especially the art and the concept - but the execution leaves a lot to be desired, particularly in terms of a Zuda entry. ore ... http://bit.ly/45rOWd
This is some really nice work, Bryan -- from concept to layouts to color to character, well done.
Your sketching and coloring are wonderful. I have many girl friends...and some guy friends who'd really dig this type of anime storytelling. I, on the other hand, think this is what gives anime, and even manga, a bad name. Mindless superficiality that doesn't so much create story but keep echoing the idea of the concept over and over. Witches in space is all I got from this, and that was from the synopsis on the pull-down bar. It just seems like this was created for visual only.
All i can say is WOW! Your artwork is incredible, your colour work is like an acid trip gone mad...in short, fantastic!
Incredible work, probably my best read on this site for a while.
The production quality of this comic is very high. But it doesn't cover up a lot of the faults. Firstly the comic is far too busy. Even with only a few panels on each page it's easy to get lost. You never have any gutters between panels it's always layered on top of something. The art is occasionally strong, but occasionally lazy. There are scenes with your character is in panel where she doesn't have a face, but she's not far enough away where you can get away with it. Finally the writing doesn't give me any information about the character or the story, nothing for me to grab hold of and say "this is what it's about" if I was describing it to someone. I'd just have to say, "Some Japanese style cartoon witch is fighting a big monster" And that'd be it.
And don't get too discouraged- I don't think most of Zuda's audience is into anime or manga style, so I'm seeing a lot of comments that reflect this. It will probably find more success as an independent webcomic or somewhere like wirepop.com
I really, really liked this comic! You used the page layout nicely- it's dynamic, it flows easily on the eyes. The character is cute and visually appealing. The lettering is just the right size. Most Zuda comics make my eyeballs hurt because they're such a strain to read, but this one was very easy. I'd love to see more, even if you don't continue on Zuda, but still use the Zuda page specs. The premise sounds really interesting- I mean, space witches: how much more high concept can you get?
If you can tell us more about Ailith- make her a more unique and interesting character, add some depth to her, and give us a sense of her central conflict (what's her ultimate mission in life, and how will she achieve it?), this could be a great comic.
Excellent manga Bryan! You've progressed so much through the years, and you keep improving on your amazing art skills and your unique, yet classic, anime style. You draw so precisely and effortlessly, and you make it look easy! I'm really impressed with your coloring and your attention to detail. Some may criticize your anatomical proportions, but I think it's just your style, and I like how you exagerate some of the female characteristics! You do it without making your characters overly provactive, but give them a bit of sex appeal, and there's nothing wrong with that! I've seen you draw sexy, I've seen you draw cute, I've seen you draw serious, and I've seen you draw beautiful. Your art has always been very versitile. Your manga just has that art style that when you look at it you automatically know "That's Bryan Golden's work!"
Wonderful work Bryan! Keep it up! :)
You've got really nice art. The story is more style over substance but I still thought it was pretty entertaining. This is a tough month to compete in because everyone has really good art, as well as stories. It's the strongest group of competitors as a whole I've seen so far.
great color palette and nice special effects. You nailed the manga look (apart from it reading right to left), the composition is point on and easy to follow.
However, no matter how great the colors and special effects are, they don't hide your noob skillz at drawing, learn anatomy.
and those 8 pages did not grab my interest in the story, this is like your stereotypical anime; all flash but no substance.
Not my cup of tea, but the coloring is easy on the eyes. It looks pretty, but I couldn't get into it based on what was written on the page.
"...but attracts attention from the rest of the Space Witches due to her unprecedented..." ...boobs?
.
The bottom blurb of the synopsis summarizes a very interesting concept: witches and that school of magic, in space. Its an interesting and potentially engaging twist on the classic.
.
But the comic itself seems to fall down when the recipe appears to be:
- T&A
- T&A
- Technobabble if it was scifi, but as a crossover its more like magical-technobabble.
- Battle scene!
- A bit more closer T&A
None of these are bad things by themselves or in moderation... but there isn't much beyond them here. Little to no introduction of the character, her personality or her traits beyond the... ahem... obvious. She is a witch, she has nice assets, and searches for artifacts... but there's not enough to pull in the reader's interest.
.
Pro: the art is beautiful and the color palette is really eye popping! A+ on the art
I really like this entry a lot. Dug the art & designs, in particular the M.E.O.W. device. I would have to agree that the action in the last couple of pages got really muddled. You might want to slow down the action; make better use of your framing and distance us from the action a bit, give us a few nice long shots of the characters interacting. I was intrigued enough by the overall concept and art to be interested in reading more. My only serious complaint: the use of action words to describe each action. You could just as well remove them in most cases, (as your art clearly demonstrates what action is occurring), or using more traditional comic sound effects when appropriate. I personally would like to see more of this. Keep up the good work!
Howdy. If you're interested, my review of this comic can be read here. Good luck with the competition:

Very funky art! Nice work. I like that this one is different from all the other entries this month.
Too Generic looking.
Good art. I didn't understand the story until I read the synopsis. That should be in the story too. Otherwise the reader is just lost as to whats happening.
I find her face too generic. Sorry. I feel like there's no enough personal style here. And while the art's cool...It's too bright I think. The colors are too saturated. And like when she's doing her attack, it could have been a little more dynamic. Especially with speech bubble arrangement and font. Just things to think about I guess.
Exciting pallette choices, excellent! Great Heroine, beautifully drawn.
I'm actually really digging your coloring and panel layout, but there's not really anything special about the anime/manga style that I can see. I'm not saying it's not nice art, I just think I'd like to see more of your own style in it (also, I love the monster design!)
Good luck!
Interesting art :), very nice.
I`ve been hoping for a good anime for a while now! Your art is amazing, flawless to my eye. I didn`t even mind the layout. Stories just not strong enough for me. Good luck!
Reminds me of the Guilty Gear series.

can we get one page layout that doesn't look like it was illustrated on a bunch of broken glass? i can see how that style of page layout can serve a story point, but every page?? you clearly have some talent in the art department! the layout and story really made it difficult for me to appreciate the artwork.
What you do, you do very well. It's not to my taste, but the art is very clean and well executed. I would love to see some more of your work, although maybe not this story in particular. Good luck at any rate!
Mpd: Amazingly, that's how most people are in real life. Unless they're bowlegged, or walking on a tightrope.
Interesting, but without direction. It seems like something from Hack//Sign. Not much is explained.
There is something wrong with this comic... First, it's pretty, but you've really just given us 6 pages with two pinups up front. Also, the panel layout is confusing, but that hardly matters since the art seems to have no real bearing on any of the story to begin with; all of the action seems to just be the "coolest" pose, instead of anything that actually makes any coherent sense. And the hilariously bad catch-phrase named attacks at the end were unbearable. They might work in an anime from the 90's, but they just don't make any damn sense in a comic. Add to that the fact that there is very little actually going on here, confusion or not, and there's not much reason to need to read any more.
your character reminds me a little to much of that yougioh characther the dark wizard. and its all very odd in rhythm... but good luck
Great art, but the bubbles and lettering sorta distracted me...but the coloring was top notch
mpd, I didn't have noticed until you pointed it out.
Maybe it's just my age but why are her knees closer together than her ankles in every panel? I notice these things!
I don't think I'm totally hooked into the story, but there's some sweet manga-style artwork here. Good luck in the competition!
very nice colouring on this one, wasn't keen on the green speech bubbles though.
good luck
Beautiful art work. Good luck!
Your speech bubbles seem to be shaped to accommodate vertically oriented text... fix that in the future.
Otherwise, the art is nice, not my kind of story though.
There's a ton of of great art this month! Cute concept and art here...Good luck this month Bryan!
