Urbis Faerie
Some people shine with a special light (while others seem naturally inclined to scowl and scurry from that light). In the world of Urbis Faerie, all human beings are the direct descendants of various fantasy races, so that beautiful girl with the long blonde hair and glittering eyes may actually be an elf… or a fairy. Urbis Faerie is a town founded as a haven for those in whom the old bloodlines run strong; a fresh start away from the old feuds and the tyranny of the Masters. Lauren hasn’t been in town long, but she’s fallen in love with her life here. When she receives a summons from her parents via their terrifying henchman, Mr. Hound, Lauren has to decide whether to leave Urbis Faerie and those she just might love, or risk the destruction of the town itself at the hands of her parents. But people are changing –- becoming more like their fantastic ancestors –- and unravelling the riddle of just who is descended from what will allow Lauren to stop the town from destroying itself… but only if she sticks around long enough to figure it all out!

I think this is top shelf. As soon as I make the stupid vote counter work I'm giving it five stars. So suck it, haters.
Great work Robert. I like the characters speaking to the audience, gimmick or not. Look forward to more
Original, somewhat bleak but satirical storytelling...loved it. Would love to read more.
Thanks very much to the folks behind Zuda for giving us a chance, and to everyone who supported us and gave us their vote (and to those who didn't, but requested to see more!). We'll be continuing at www.urbisfaerie.com as soon as I figure out how to put up a website.
In the meantime, keep an eye on http://elf-help.blogspot.com/ for further developments!
This was my original vote, and I still think the entry most deserving of the contract. Oh well, at least we know that Urbis is going to get a chance to continue elsewhere. I can't wait!
cool so far....
This is a pretty work... The father wolverine, it's a very nice... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, great work!

I still think this would be a cool graphic novel. :)
Dear Author,
You've started off very well (although with a gimmick, as the main character states herself) and shown that you understand the specifics of Zuda - indeed, it's not a place to shoehorn made-for-print material in. That's what made the ending so disappointing. There was NO ending, no cliffhanger, as if you forgot that those eight pages should tease the viewer and invite him to vote. Still, the effort is appreciated.
Well, I'm pleased to be right and now I'm sorry as well! It's shame that Zuda (I don't mind blaming them) screws up anyones submission like that. I seem to remember them making things difficult for American Strife. Lesson is I suppose - don't submit until you've got it absolutely right! Best of luck for a late surge!!!
mpd57 sez: page 6 especially looks like it's been drawn very well and then cut out with sissors and pasted back together by someone with no skill whatsoever...
Unfortunately, that's exactly what happened. It was I who originally wrassled the pages into the Zuda format. Martin quickly and quite correctly objected to my hack-job and sent along much better looking files, but due to a mix-up somewhere along the line Zuda went live with the old pages (and the wrong synopsis, initially, too).
Hopefully you'll look us up in February and check out the nice, pretty pages. :)
Great stuff as usual! I'm in love with the dialogue on the latest page.
Ferris! Get off of the float!
Firstly any comic book that even mentions Nietzche has me putting a gun to my head! Only James Joyce would make me pull the trigger though!
The opening panel was wonderful and most of the characters really well drawn, very clean, clear attractive art. The layout wasn't too hot though, page 6 especially looks like it's been drawn very well and then cut out with sissors and pasted back together by someone with no skill whatsoever, and there's a splash page (or is it two panels - I can hardly tell?) with very little splash, which all seems very odd considering the talent!
The fourth wall stuff didn't bother me, and the dialogue was good. Probably didn't go anywhere quick enough to be honest - I really wanted a sense of the town and the population and I what I might expect in future, without giving too much away! The character building stuff worked for the first few pages, but then interest tailed off rapidly - philosphy works best at the wrong end of a gun barrel I think!
Thanks everyone for the support, kind words, and encouragement to continue Urbis Faerie. There will be more. Watch this space, as well as:

I promise we will swiftly and conclusively resolve the mystery of what Nikki does with her condom-like hat!
"Ladies and gentlemen, you are such a wonderful crowd, we'd like to play a little tune for you. It's one of my personal favorites and I'd like to dedicate it to a young man who doesn't think he's seen anything good today - Cameron Frye, this one's for you!"
Beuler and Shakespeare is some good company.
40! Yes! Urbis will continue!
I added you guys to my favs so you will do more! :)
LOVE IT. The fourth wall breaking is perfect in making me feel like I'm not only her friend, but a citizen of the town. This is where my vote is going this month. And for the first time, I can honestly say this is a comic that I would follow off the Zuda site if it doesn't win.
And, just 'cause... Kingofsnake: If you are saying that breaking the fourth wall is amateur, I would like refer you to the works of Bertolt Brecht (who writes academically at length about the effectiveness of breaking the fourth wall), Neil Simon, Stephen Sondheim, and William Shakespeare. (Sorry for the theatre references, it's what I studied.) Oh, and how about "Ferris Bueller's Day Off"?
Vertigo will put this out, no? It is very good
40 is the target? I've got four friends that I've been trying to get to come to zuda. One of whom is a big Nietzche fan. Another is a big fantasy fan. This is very good indeed.
And I just realized that my previous comment makes it sound like I'm badmouthing all the other contestants, and that couldn't be further from the truth. I've found almost everything here to be very entertaining. It just seems strange to me that this comic, which has impressed me quite a bit, should be ranked where it is currently.
You know, in looking over the work available this week, I'm shocked that this doesn't have a better ranking. It's bizarre. The art is tight, and while the story is meager so far, it looks like it will develop into something great. Seriously, how do they figure the rankings for this site anyway?
If at least four more people favourite us, we'll not only continue the series, we'll go DAILY for a week.
So, hypothetically, if Urbis Faerie does not win the contract, might it continue elsewhere?

please tell me you will continue this comic!!
Saw you on CFRN today comic looks good so far
Updated the blog with more character profiles and other things: http://elf-help.blogspot.com/
Remember Urb fans- if you haven't already sent your friends to zuda, use the send to a friend feature profusely!
I like the art in some pages. Nice dialogue, but nothing happens in 8 pages. trough the synopsis it look with a lot of potential.
I like the dialogue and overall feel to the story...It'll be interesting to see where it goes. The artwork tends to be a bit unenthusiastic at times, meaning that a few panels are decently drawn and others seemed rushed. It does have a sort of Mike Kaluta feel to it in places. With a bit more work and refinement, this strip has lots of potential.
I like it. I just wish there was more!!
If you don't win are you still going to continue doing it?
Thanks to everyone who's taken the time to comment -- it's much appreciated.
For the curious, there are more Urbis Faerie character profiles up at

Frankenstein Casanova loves a great philosophical dissertation in his graphic media, but when dealing with 8 pages it should be all killer and no filler. The first half of the story took too much time to develop and then it ends abruptly. As a 24 page comic that works, but it doesn't for an 8 page story. Good artwork and an intriguing concept, Frank just wants to see more.
Nice clean artwork. Slight unusual color schema is very striking. An enjoyable glimps of a promising star.
Great work Robert and co. I remember only seeing this in the inks stage, It really came together!
cool, looks really slick and professional.Really nice ballsy line work.
very likable and intriguing. as soon as i saw the twin peaks reference i knew which comic i would vote for.
Definitely not among the better stories that have been presented here on Zuda. There is nothing special about the art, and the story is remedial at best. The breaking the fourth wall stuff is really a waste of space. The only meat of this story is the pseudo-intellectual summary of Nietschian philosophy, and I don't even know why it is important or where the story is going. We don't really know anything about the characters or why we should care about them, and there is nothing significant about the city. This one is a real disappointment.
Nice, job folks. Ya know with four of you working on this feature if you all only get your families to register and vote you're going to do okay. ;-)
i think it would be a shame to let the fourth-wall-breaking go away. i like the art, and i for one would like to know that priest's reason for the howlett-hairdo...
Nope, no kidding here, frequentcontributor: some cutesy "4th wall" stuff, a near car accident, a shouting match, five (six?) mythological creatures, and a philosophical discussion (with -- and I'm rather proud of this -- a Facts of Life reference) that gets cut off mid-sentence.
Sure it's annoying to you now, but you'll be back once it gets stuck in your head... :)

Sorry, I didn't mean to post my comment 3 times.
Are you effing kidding me? You take up half the intro doing a little cutsie 4th wall thing, but then end the 8 pages mid-conversation? And where were all the mythical creatures that were promised?
Also, the art was okay only sometimes. At least there was some bloody dialogue...

Good stuff, guys! Very appealing art and color.
I'm in love with that opening widescreen splash.
Awesome Robert! I got my vote in!
Thanks for all the thoughts and opinions, guys -- always interesting to see what's working for people, and what isn't.
I've started posting UF character profiles at http://elf-help.blogspot.com/
Good art, good story and it's funny too!
Gets my vote, but I hope Demons in the Closet wins too so what am I to do?
