This was surprisingly good. The art was a tad off, but still, a good read. Well done!

Alright, since Road doesn't need my help to win and I really like this strip (it made me laugh) I am changing my vote to the Croc-man. I realize how almost pointless this is now, but to make me laugh out loud is an epic feat, and deserving of my vote. Way to go Steve I hope you continue this no mater what, and please tell me where I can find Croc-man after this. I am in the process of opening a new restaurant and could use the laughs after work. As I said before, you have found a soft spot in an otherwise serious heart.

http://www.rarebit-fiend-book.com/
that's a good link I found. there are some links on the left hand side to some sample pages that give you a pretty decent idea of the strip... though the words are pretty teeny tiny.
basically the premise is people have outrageous nightmares and, in the last panel, wake up and blame that rarebit they ate before bed. for those of you who've never heard of a rarebit here's a wickipedia definition
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welsh_rarebit
My favorite strip is one that involves a baby who knocks over some toy blocks that sets off a chain of events that eventually knocks down a building. maybe if i get time i'll scan some of my favorite strips in and put them in photobucket or something.

I'm sorry to say DShide, but the golden age of newspaper comic strips has been over for about 60 years or so. If you looked back at some of strips back in the day you'd be amazed at the diversity. Windsor McKay, best known for Little Nemo in Slumberland, and another lesser known strip, Curse of the Rarebit Fiend... which was a lot darker than anything you see in the papers now a days.
I think it'd be cool if a paper picked up Croc Man but I doubt any would except for the more underground publications. And if it was in print I'd want full color. I think the color is really the biggest thing supporting the art. And I especially love the croc man's pink shirt. It's immasculating and a complimentary color at the same time!

I submit that those comics feel out of place in the sunday funnies as well, but in a good way. There should be more awesome comics in the Sunday papers (like Croc Man) so that the good ones don't feel so out of place among the boring ones.

Thanks for "getting it" bobby. you hit the nail on the head... especially the part about people around him being in danger! Glad a lot of people picked up on the "sunday funnies" feel. since i work at a newspaper I see the same old comic strips everyday.

The Web is the perfect place for the Croc-man. The newspaper funny pages sometimes feel overly-sanitized and inoffensive. Croc man's subject matter often skews to the dark and bizarre (people are always under the threat of being devoured, whether they know it or not, and you'll never see Andy Capp at the pub drinking rat blood!). Although I'd love to see it in the Sunday papers, I think most people would be shocked by it.
The art serves to highlight the darker stuff by being a deliberate contrast to it. At first glance it looks like a lighthearted read, and I think that gives it's macabre twists more impact.

Steve,
this is a funny comic. I really enjoy the Crocodile Man's silence... his expressions (and sometimes lack thereof) tell the story so well. While I must say that the comic never made me laugh aloud, it made me smile as I read it, adding to my day. Mission accomplished, I think. I told a lot of people about it. I would certainly seek this comic out if you had to take it elsewhere to continue it. Best of luck in the competition.

I had a comic strip in the paper for several years, Then I started doing hero comics and I'm here to tell you that humor is very difficult while doing most comics is a no brainer so long as you can pace a story that is,not to say that comic book drawing is a walk in the park,BUT,I found doing strips more taxing than comic pages,AND,in my opinion you do this very well indeed. In many ways though I feel this competition is not fair(BECAUSE)most people coming to this site are looking for fan boy, comic type, earth shattering comics. In a competition between snoopy and Superman who do you think would win on this site.I not sure if you have noticed but most of the cartoony comics get pushed to the back of the line, anyhow my opinion means spit but you are still a prince among men in my book.good luck in your endeavors.

I really like the crocodile man. I really like the art. The hilarity isn't quite there for me yet. I think this has the makings of a really good comic, but you may need to crank out a few dozen strips to find the right rhythm. I'd go even more absurd. Keep at it, in any event. I could easily see a refined version of this in syndication.

DShide: If by "something more" you mean lots and lots of watered down Superheroes, I would gladly be mired in the "BS" you're so opposed to.

I'd also like to point out that "Joe Comics" is also just a humour strip, just aimed at Superheros rather than working the class.

Hate like this makes me eager to get my humour strip into a competition. :)

All right I might have gone a bit far with the pull the plug thing and the swamp of BS. Your art isn't trash either. It's good for a comic strip in the paper. I was lead to this site with the belief it was for Comics as in marvel, DC, image. Not the sunday paper. This should explain my attack on so many of the current entries. Yes everyone does laugh at the crocodile man, and you for making it. Is it just me or are the majority of entries in this comp attempts at cheap humor. I was glad when the comic medium was starting to move from the "funny books" genre to something more, but most of the entries here seem to want to drag the industry back down into the swamp of mundane BS. I only read 3 pages you get a 1. Terrible art. I could do better with my eyes closed trying to draw upside down (which is an actual tool art teachers use). The writing was so lame and boring you lost me part way through page three. No human should willing have time to go through the complete nonsense you and every one but the Road and Joe comics provides. If you were trying to make a valid reason for to be legal youthanasia you have succeeded admirably.

Everyone laughs at the Crocodile Man. Unfortunately the laughter is usually at him and not with him. Crocodile Man just doesn’t fit in anywhere. He’s too much of a man to survive in the wilderness and not man enough to fit in with humans. Confusion and miscommunication follow Crocodile Man wherever he goes as he struggles to grasp our alien culture. Though as a recent college graduate and employee of Winston and Weasel Inc., he tries his best to be a productive member of society. Some people view The Crocodile Man as an oddity. Some view him as a menace and a monster. Yet others see him as no different than any other person. He deals with the same problems as any of us. He pays bills, goes to work, and has problems in his love life. Every once in a while though, his reptilian personality overwhelms his civilized side. The other main characters in the strip are: Mr. Gallstone, Croc Man’s spineless and stressed out boss, Amber, a co-worker who awkwardly tries to defend Croc Man, Tina, another co-worker and Amber’s close friend who is disgusted by Crocodile Man, Aaron, Croc Man’s slacker roommate who’s in his fifth year of college, Carter, an egotistical and arrogant co-worker who considers himself a “ladies man,” and his trusty bartender Marion.
