I really dig the retro look and feel. I am curious to see where this goes. If I have anything to be critical about I would say the dialogue needs some work in the sense that everyone kinda talks the same. It feels a bit robotic. Enjoyed it! Good luck!

You want the good or the bad first cause nothing is ugly about this strip. The bad the story didn't really grab me, I wanted more supernatural action and this seemed more like a light-hearted action romp.
************************************************************
Great synopsis really a good set-up for a very good ongoing comic. The colors were all very good, readable font = niffty as hell. I like the old school looking art on this one it could be in the funny papers very easy, great craft on that.
***********************************************************
The story seemed kind of typical, but you did give a good introduction to the two main characters and set things up nicely if you win the contest. Nice classic panel layout as well.
************************************************************
A very good comic i thought, despite wanting a little something else in the story. I'm going to give it some more reads and see if it grows on me -other comics have.:)

After much thought I have decided to vote for "Captain Luck" even though it's currently rated number 7 :(
With luck "Captain Luck" will get a second chance if it does not make it this time around. A good fun strip that could be read regularly.

mpd57: That's a ton of comment! Thanks! I kind of like the inherent conflict you mention as a possible drawback. I do indeed have plans for paranormal happenings to conflict and contrast with the straight (if light-hearted) adventure and cartooniness of the style. And the Crystal Parrot is the McGuffin to introduce that mix. It wasn't really intended to be a secret long enough not to use it as a title. I think the name evokes a Tin Tin story. "The Maltese Falcon" made me wonder just what was it, and why was everybody "dying" to get it?
Yep I was homaging comic strips, but not to the point I can't throw in a splash or vary from the two tier layout and take advantage of the format possibilities. You know those old strip guys would've been splashin' if they could've!
I think in time I could get you to not fight your urge to like it! I believe I was heading down the same avenues you suggest it needed to go, but didn't get to in my 8 Zuda screens. Thanks again for your thoughts.

Great work, Dan! It's reminiscent of classic newspaper strips from the 40s and 50s. I like how you made it clear very early on, though, that the story is set in today's world, with the mention of a "handheld" on page 2. Nice, solid storytelling technique! Keep it up and good "Luck"!

drraven: This story was mapped out before Zuda and I would approach it differently if I'd created it specifically for Zuda in regards to pacing an 8 page intro. It's a good point and maybe I'll suffer a little for that. And I don't mind you pointing out the little things either! I'll watch my accent marks.:)

mpd57 says:

Captain Luck looks good, has great charm and a period feel that's true (in part) to its origins while being set in the modern era. I'm not sure that there isn't a conflict inherent in that idea though as we all know how small the world is now. In the forties the war had made the world seem big, so that Terry and the Pirates for example could be seen as being almost realistic in some senses. There was lots of adventure to be had in the world. Now those same sensibilities seem out of place and dated. I think a lot of people are coming round the idea that we'd just rather find some place safe to hide from the world! This strip is now about as far from realistic as you might be able to get. Because of that disconnect between two completely different eras the scenario seems almost childish. You could rescue that disconnect by using a really fantastic device or McGuffin, something to spin the tale out of straight homage and into something different and new. Something we haven't seen before. Tin Tin had a sense of the fantastic and that's what this lacks. The crystal Parrot itself apart from sounding stupid in the first place is far too much information! What madness possessed you to call it that? At least you could have held off on the mystery of what everyone was after and not telegraph it in a completely unnecessary way. Now I know everything I need to know without ever reading this again! That's shame because I liked the art a lot and the more general idea of an adventure story. I wasn't terribly impressed by the progression from one panel to the next however and the splash page looks horrible. If you're going to ape classic newspaper strips you might know that splash pages are pretty much a no-no. Maybe two panels like the title screen at most – that did look good. Ultimately the problem I have is that I'm not sure what this all adds up to. If it's straight adventure, I've seen it all before. If it's a light comedy, it's not funny. If it's a homage then it doesn't recognise enough of what has gone before and it doesn't add anything new to the mix. Sounds like I hated it? I didn't. I had an uncontrollable urge to like it, but there's just not enough there. You've got to turn the dial up to eleven with this kind of thing and I don't think here that we've managed to reach six. You should dirty up the story a bit to create a contrast with the lovely clean art!

I loooove the art and the fast rhythm! Though the sound effects could use more work.
The story seems to be another victim of the eight-page-curse, because it doesn't really manage to be interesting enough and it ends too abruptly.
And I might sound a little too anal, but the written accent in Spanish goes over the character, not besides it, like "QUÉ DIABLOS!". I have more similar annoyances like that but I wont go over it now.
Good luck.

The person who gets the most people to the Golden pages will receive a one of a kind sketch of Kintaro signed by Scott and me. Get all of your friends, loved ones and associates to stop by Zuda and take a look at Golden. If they leave a message stating that you sent them over there I will keep track and the person with the most referrals by May 23rd will receive the signed Kintaro sketch as well as a signed copy of the script. Sound fun? If you have any questions about it drop me a note here or over in the Zuda talk back section. Don't waste any time. Start getting those folks over there now!

If you want to see a picture of the sketch you will receive go here...

This is the only entry since Zuda's inception that has impressed me. It is also the only entry that gave me pause to stop, read, and admire. I find it familiar and fresh, with a flavor from the past but developed for the future. It therefore is a creation that I would follow wherever it finds a home.

Furthermore, I am curious to learn if this Dan Davis, is the same inker from Travis Charest's FLASH annual. If so...cool.

Captain Jake Luck and Wink Goodwin own and operate the Good-Luck Salvage Company inside the Bermuda Triangle, from a renovated lighthouse on the island of Crane Key. But unfortunately for them, they find their search for underwater treasure constantly hampered by the strange paranormal phenomena that haunts the region. Ghost ships and ghost pirates, UFOs and USOs (their Underwater Submersible counterparts), tales of sunken ships lost at sea, disappearing planes lost in the clouds, weird electro-magnetic forces, time that stops or jumps ahead! The area is one of the most bizarre on the planet! Ignoring the legends, our fearless (or foolish?) adventurers have decided the Triangle is still the perfect place to search for the missing treasure that sank with all those ill-fated ships. But a freak storm has landed their one and only search vessel on a pile of rocks and the two on hard times. That is until a mysterious woman appears, offering them salvation. But she’s no angel. Rita Castro is an adventuress herself and is employed by the world’s richest treasure hunter, Karl Luter, who is in the middle of an expedition to retrieve an ancient object from the ocean’s floor. An object sent there by another freakish storm ages ago from the days of Spanish treasure ships and pirate marauders. But after meeting the suspicious crew they are to work with on their latest salvage project, Captain Luck is left wondering, just who are the good guys? And what lurks beneath the seas?
