Clarabelle Dust was born into a life of great privilege, in the city of Mae, on the artificial island of Torros. She was a good girl in every measurable sense. Polite, quiet, well educated. Taught to pity those less fortunate. She ate a slice of cantaloupe each morning, with a single pinch of sugar, while her parents and other butter-faced grownups discussed the practicalities of "rescuing" the fallen mainland. She knew little of their politics. They said the world was lost without them; the masses needed a Firm Hand. They said millions starved, ignorance was a disease, and they were the Cure. Clare knew only that her well-heeled shoes were a decadence, that her braces were an extravagance, that jellybeans and long baths and perfumes made her guilty in some fundamental way. It was on her eighteenth birthday that she found an outlet for this shame. She stabbed a police officer in the gut. He did not die, but it still felt like progress. Her parents swore it was a phase. It seems a revolution had begun in the city of Mae. The wise citizens hadn't noticed the signs, though, and were shocked to find it upon them so suddenly, with such fury; a serious threat to the Hope they offered the world. Clare joined the agitators, completely. The politics were still murky, but the actions at least felt pure. She bombed government installations, murdered politicians, exposed corrupt corporate traitors. It was a good time. She was happy...

Hi Guys,
Man , you're really kicking ass with this.
I just read the latest chunk and am into the story.
Pretty explosions too (o;
spectacular opening!
oh look, almost 100k hits! USA! USA!
thanks sham. think it's "kbrmph". :)
The mystery is solved, and it does not seem to involve a pig :(
Loving the sound effects btw. What is the rest of the one behind the helicopter in page 39?
ape: we have some normal animals too. :)
saulone: thanks so much, as always, it comes as very high praise coming from someone who draws something like azure.
twotimingpete, your vehicles and environments are really well done. Very game-style high concept art - something I really dig about your work, and each page keeps that level of quality. That heliplane is bad@$$. This is a little shot of awesome.
Aw. Poor dog. At least it didn't explode, though.
thanks for the comments guys. and the story will become increasingly clear as time goes.
This was a little hard to follow at first, but I kinda dig it now.
Pretty slick helicopter.
pretty sure no worms game has a pig launcher, but there are sheep bombs.
Shamem: Thanks. Pig launcher WOULD be cool :-) I sorta remember a video game featuring a pig launcher. Hmmm. Worms maybe?
CalCarter: The name "Gulch" does have meaning, but it's not explicitly spelled out yet...oh, and I'm not getting the Pray For Death connection, really, but I did enjoy that comic. Thanks for reading!
I think Gulch sounds cooler than Ditch. :)
Not to be insensitive, and maybe I've read too many comics on the site in one sitting, but what exactly does 'Gulch' mean - in terms of the story? Does the character find herself in a gulch: "A ravine, or part of the deep bed of a torrent when dry". If so, why not call the story 'Ditch'? This really seems like a prettier version of 'Pray For Death' which I just read - only it makes more sense.
Haha, well i figured you wouldn't have gone that far, but i hoped. You have to admit, it would be amusing.
Anywho, great job as usual.
stroker: thanks :) really appreciate it.
spirrus/sham: there's no pig launcher. people are joking (I think they are, anyway!) I think that'd be a bit over the top.
Pig launcher...?
this stuff is great! lovin it.
It sounds like a pig.. It explodes like a pig...
Was it a pig!?
never thought anyone would predict the pig launcher. :(
South Park uses the word durp. D u r p, is the proper spelling. Durpa durp is also acceptable, but less used.
Get out the pig launcher!! Ree, reee, reee-BOOM!!
who says "derp"?
Rory: Thanks! Looking forward to more Extracurricular pages.
Spirrus: Maybe not the brightest idea, but it is possible to take down a helicopter with a handgun. Or at least that's what I've been told. :-)
DERP DERP! LETS SHOOT THE ROTOR AND HOPE WE GET LUCKY!
Nice update guys! Blasted gremlins are still giving EAC trouble.
thanks ape. I've been drawing airplanes for a few years now. a little easier than people most the time -- for me, anyway.
I like the chopper. It's clear you have a flair for aircraft.
I guess we'll just see, hamax! :) the scene continues for a lil while longer.
pg 37, panel 6 ... red line near the right wing of the helicopter is a laser site from or TO the chopper?
I'd like to buy the guy who did it a drink!
Yay, finally live! And wow... I'd forgotten how sweet this page looks. :-)
btw, I'm not sure why a page wasn't added. it appears none of the friday lineup was updating. I'm assuming there was a technical problem. I'm sure it'll be sorted out.
dunno, I don't judge. :) live and let live. thanks for reading. :D
Why is the dog blowing Ben on the 4th panel?
thanks. :)
Honestly, Gulch has never been better. Now is the PERFECT time to be a fan. Thanks for all the great entertainment.
stop looking at that dog like it's going to explode, people. not every animal is going to explode!
woops, sorry I didn't notice your question dean. can't say for certain on the sandiego thing either way yet. can't wait to see the debut of DW!
Devil's Wake will finally make the debut of new pages here on May 28th! Are you guys going to San Diego this year? I'm planning to go and it would be awesome to meet some of the Zuda gang face-to-face.
thanks :) we have an RSS available for updates at our gulch website... gulchcomic.com :)
This is VERY intriguing...if only there was an rss.
thanks, dean. about how far off from the aeon debut are we? I look forward to seeing new pages.
Wow, I've been away for a while trying to meet my own deadlines and I'm blown away by the quality of the new pages you guys are putting up! Really enjoy the textures and colors on the art, and the story is getting more and more intriguing, keep up the awesome work.
shamem: thanks for the nice words -- characters being hard to tell apart is invariably my fault, but I am working on improving.
damned dirty ape: thanks so much :)
You guys have a knack for fleshing out these strange worlds your comics take place in.
Loving this so far, the by far best comic i have found on Zuda!
Only crit i have is that some of the characters are really hard to tell apart, though that is probably mostly due to the week between reading each page. I had to go though and read it all again to work out what was happening.
No aspirin needed, Isaac is used to it. :-) He spits up very special slugs... which are swallowed by other people so that he can "track" them. Seen first on page 14, when Ben receives a slug. Then the tracking is featured a bit on page 21.
What the hell is coming out that dude's mouth? Am I missing something? Shouldn't someone get that guy a cold rag or something? Maybe an aspirin?
