One of the most frequent things we hear from readers through e-mail, at conventions, in the blog and in the message boards is a sincere desire for a comic that didn't win a competition to continue in some way.

While Zuda has posted over 60 comics at this point, only one per month is awarded a contract. Thankfully, many of the comics that didn't win have found new homes in places like ACT-I-VATE or Amalgamated, but the question remains - how can a non-winning comic continue here on Zuda?

Now we have the answer - the ZUDA COMICS 2008 INVITATIONAL! Timed with the anniversary of announcing Zuda, our July 2008 competition will feature ten competitors returning from previous competitions - and we want to hear who you want to compete! Here's how it works:

1. Make a list of ten comics from previous competitions that you think should compete in the Invitational.

2. Send that list to FEEDBACK (feedback@zudacomics.com) no later than May 23rd.

3. We'll tally the responses and contact the creators. If a creator declines the invitation, we'll simply move on down the list to the next creator.

4. Throughout June and July we'll announce which comics will compete.

5. On July 7th (the start date of the July competition) we'll post eight new screens for each of the competing comics (for a total of 16 screens if you include the original 8).

After that, normal competition rules apply and may the best comic win!

Can you send in more than one list? (I made a bit of a hiccup on mine)

Just curious is e-mailing the list to feedback@zudacomics.com the same as clicking on the feedback link in the top right hand corner of the screen and sending it via that?

John, you could snag another artist if DITC gets picked...right?

I retract what I said about Demons in the Closet. Sage isn't interested in continuing so it's on to other projects! (Demons may live in another form later.)

Frankenstein Casanova says let the Battle of Numerous Number Twos for the New Number One Spot commence! Maybe someone that Frank Cass votes for will finally win...

That's an interesting one Phil. The submissions process is very individual. Meaning, a single submissions comes from a single user account. That account is, in effect, the "Team Leader". So it's very possible to submit the same concept but executed with a different team at that point.

As far as ongoing series go, this is already covered - in fact its the very reason we have two contacts once a comic wins.

The Services Agreement covers the work actually being performed (the writing, pencilling or what have you) while the Rights Agreement covers the participation you've got for creating the property. This is how guys like Bob Kane (or his estate) still collect on things like Batman. Zuda works the same way.

Here's a little hypothetical: What if a former contestant's comic were selected to compete in the invitational, but the entire creative team weren't willing/able to create 8 new screens? Would you accept a follow up with an alternate artist/writer/letterer in a case like that?

I think this is an interesting question not just for the second chance competition you're setting up, but for the Zuda ongoings in general. It's a fact of life that sometimes stuff happens, people get sick, personal stuff comes up or sometimes people just plain flake out. It's a big point in the contracts that the people who do the submission be the people who, in the event of a contest victory, provide the remaining screens. But if they can't, is the series DOA, or does the Zuda staff and the remaining creators would attempt to work something out?

I only nominated six! I think I'm in for a shock when some of my least favourite comics make an unexpected comeback! I'm a glass half empty kind of guy - but I am trying!

I'm guessing that there are creators out there who, for one reason or another, won't be able to spend their valuable time on this unless they know for sure whether or not they're going to be in the contest. So, for those creators, they will likely have roughly 4 weeks (or a little less) to return 8 new screens to Zuda in order to allow you guys the necessary time to prep the files for the competition. Yikes.

HAHAHA Rob ;)
It actually wasn't 1-10 believe it or not. The real question is who do i vote for if Crooked Man doesn't make a comeback???? Another great reason for the contest (besides a comic that lost getting a contract), is seeing the next 8 screens on a comic that might be dead otherwise. Their are more than 9 other comics i would like to see more of, I'm sure everyone else feels the same.

Thanks guys.

Rob - no, the order of the top ten list doesn't affect any kind of point system. It's a simple thumbs up/down tally.

Good point about the May competition (I assume that's what you mean by "this month"). The May competition ends on May 30th. So you can "hedge your bet" and put in a May competitor if you so choose. Worst case scenario is that your pick ends up winning May and then wont need to be in the invitational at all.

Ron,
Does the order of the top ten list effect things in anyway? Are there going to be more points awarded for a reader's number one then his number ten?
Can RKB vote for CROOKED MAN ten times?
Can it be one-through-ten on his list?
What date does this month's contest end? Are comics in this month eligible?
