The time is now. Aliens have invaded our planet, and over the last 30 years, have slowly and quietly begun to replace us. The U.S. Government has had knowledge of the invasion since the first alien stepped foot on Earth’s soil. For fear of mass panic, they hid it from the public eye and created a top-secret division called Non-Exertus. This division originally consisted of three teams of military scientists, with the primary objective to study our visitors. It did not take them long to discover the violent and malicious intentions of our uninvited co-inhabitants. Non-Exertus was restructured and now there are over 600 teams spread throughout not only the U.S., but also the rest of the world, fighting secretly for our very existence.
Non-Exertus 12 is an active team working in the mid-west United States. The team consists of three members. The point man, in this particular team – is a woman, know as Margaret Pace a.k.a. the Warden. Two soldiers, Wade Hachette, a.k.a. Ugly and Merit Daniels, a.k.a. Pretty Boy, assist her.

Wish you a beautiful career in the comic-world.
Working, working. I now life can be hard!

Nice art (mostly) and some nice design elements (the lower-half samurai masks), but I couldn't tell what was going on during the first two pages. Lots of tiny panels with dialogue balloons littered over them didn't help, but I guess I just couldn't figure out why that chick was killing her friends... It made (slightly) more sense later, but still... As someone else mentioned, the art is vaguely Simon Bisley-esque. If you (the creators) can find a copy, I would recommend tracking down the comic Thump 'n Guts by Kevin Eastman and Bisley. It's basically this, but even weirder and from 12-or-so years ago. (That is a complement, by the way; I'm not saying you ripped off some book you've probably never even heard of. I just thought you'd dig it...)
Hey yall!
Dang thanks for all the kind words!
Wow RKB, man I think that may have been one of the most in depth and well worded reviews of any art project Ive ever been associated with. Thank you for taking the time to lay that all down, I really appreciate it!
spence-awwww your making me blush, bro you know anything youd draw Ill color any day!

RKB-
-First off, thank you and I'm very glad to be back! I truly appreciate you taking the time to go through our comic screen by screen and posting your thoughts on each.
-A little backstory about the Soupcan13/Splatted team up:
Dave is one of my best friends, known him since highschool, we went to college together, roommates at one point and he was a groomsman in my wedding. Well, Dave downloaded a character sketch I had done of Agent Happydeath and colored it up for fun (it's posted on his deviant art page) and I was blown away! So, I asked him to help me with this project and I'm extremely happy with how it turned out!
Hopefully not the last Soupcan13/Splatted team up.
-The reasons I love lots of panels:
1. I feel cheated when I buy a comic that is a bunch of splash pages.
2. When I write and draw a comics my intent is to SHOW and NOT TELL as much as possible. I want reader's eye to keep moving. Large amounts of description boxes and thought boxes kill the pacing of the story for me.
-The masks:
Wade and Merit think there cool and in the spirit of comics a hero needs to hide their true identity.
The ending will hopefully not be page 8, but I understand your point.
I let Dave handle the Sound fx question, because he the colors, letters, and sound fx.
Thanks again for the kind words and support. They are much appreciated!!!
glad to see you back splatted, I liked AHD, and I enjoyed this comic even more to the tune of 4/5 stars and a fav. Also, want to say that the colors by soupcan13, really made this comic for me. I liked your art better on this one, but the colors that were done really put it over the top, really set the creepy/scary vibe from the first screen. You also handled a fair number of panels all on a screen at the same time very well, the art didn't feel cramped up to me at all, very impressive. I didn't much care for the hover boards myself either, but that's my only little criticism of the comic.
*********************************************************
SCREEN 1 Again -LOVE THE COLORS, AND ART!!! I enjoyed the screen layout here, and the characters dialogue. The synopsis is also well written and helps you follow right along with screen 1. She looked evil enough, and I just knew something bad was going to happen on the next screen.
***********************************************************
SCREEN 2 ...and something bad happened. Really a action impact screen here, what with all the gruesome deaths, your not putting your readers to sleep your moving on with the story which is good seeing as how you only have 8 screens. What really sold me on this screen was the alien chick. She looked liked a combo of bashful/shy 'oh what have I done?', mixed in with a 'hope I don't get any blood on me' look. I was really impressed with the way you drew this character throughout the story, loved her/its expressions.
**********************************************************
SCREEN 3 Again a lot of panels on this screen, but handled very well. I esp. loved the sound effects of the various body parts falling, nice horror element here. Of course I love her/its expressions. She looked annoyed with the blood splattered on her, and evil when she was calling home. Really impressive art. I also think the pace of this story fit's the 8 screens so well, do you think being a Zuda vet might have helped you with that?
**********************************************************
SCREEN 4 I loved the sound effects throughout, and the colors really add so much to this work esp. in panel 5. I thought the were playing video games intro, of our heroes was done very well. Good characterization of all the main characters here in the number of screens allowed.
********************************************************
SCREEN 5 So the warden goes off to fight in her underwear? Whatever gets you in the mood I guess...;) I liked ugly and pretty boy's fighting and banter here, and your use of sound effects throughout. Might those be some blambot sound effect fonts I see? i liked the blur effect for the ground in the last panel.
***********************************************************
SCREEN 6 Loved the coloring job here esp. for the last panel. Not a fan of the hoverboards, but i don't seriously hate them. Why the face masks, it's a cool look, but is their a reason for it? Funny line about eating the warden's shorts.
**********************************************************
SCREEN 7 Very impressive panel composition here esp. in the first and last panels. Loved the look of the aliens. Of course her/its expressions are a highlight. Spencer you've become one of my favorite artists here on Zuda who has yet to win a contract, soupcan same praise goes for you as a colorist who really impressed me.
***********************************************************
SCREEN 8 Great action screen, but I felt like the ending was a little cut off, just having her/it yell/call for help from inside the van where you couldn't see her, maybe a smae close-up shot of her looking scared would have had a little more impact for a ending. That being said I liked the death skull word balloon, and her/its tee hee at using her powers on them, nice seeing her morph out to her bad alien self too. Another good bit of humor with ugly falling off his board. A really great read.
***********************************************************
I checked out your DA page and Bad Kansas looks niffty as hell, good luck with that, and on Zuda.
P.S. You should be ranked higher than 8th.
Thanks mrgodon!!!!
This is really a lot of fun. What I like about your artwork is that it's strong and to the point. I'm never confused with what I'm seeing or getting a headache trying to wade through detaiIs...It's bold and poppy, jumping out atcha, I think that makes a big difference especially when you are reading this on a screen and not on a page. I really hope this rises in the ranks!
Thank you, Gnar Duce! I'm glad you like it!!!!
Great One! I like your look. That Villain Chick Was Great! Especially with the Red eyed/Succubus look. Liked your Protagonists, they were believable to me.
Thanks Famished!!!!!
Grammar and spelling aside, I dig it! Definitely one of my favs. Art reminds me of Jamie Hewlitt and the Biz.
Thanks Albatross!!!!!
splatted, welcome back!! i really like this one! story's interesting, characters seem a little 2-d but there's room for improvement, and the art's really awesome! fun stuff!!
Thanks LOCOBOY!!!!!
Nice story too...
Nice color and art. Eyecatching
Thanks Tyler!!!
Hey guys, nice job. Here's what I liked: The art was perfect for the story. A ton of energy. You tried to do some interesting things with the panel layouts. Some worked better than others, but it definitely had the right kind of energy for this project. Though we didn't get to see a lot of the main three characters, I want to see more, so that's a good thing.
One thing I didn't love was the fact that I really couldn't tell what this comic was about without reading the synopsis. I read the comic first and didn't know what was going on. It made a lot more sense after reading the synopsis. Just something to consider when it comes to making the most of your 8 pages.
Also, thanks for advertising on www.superseedcomic.com! Good luck!
The art feels lumpy to me. The pencils and colors are spot on, but the layouts are jumbled and too busy. The typeface used for the lettering is grating to look at, and discourages me from actually reading this.
just want to thank everyone again for checking out Non-Exertus 12!!!!!
I can totally agree with you, soup. My intention wasn't to change what you were doing, but to simply make the point. I'm glad you came around with that well thought out comment. I've never been impressed with with superheroes in spandex or less, but it's not because of what they do or don't stand for. It's because if a prominent female authority, whether it be political, military, business, whatever, came out and addressed the public in her underwear...I really don't see how you can respect them. Even if you tried, really, really hard, it would, at best, be distracting.
-----
Also, earlier I said I thought the font looked 'awkward'. I was thinking more about it and I think the reason for it is that the font is very straight and almost looks..archaic? (I couldn't think of a better word). The comic itself is modern and the artwork is very organic and lively, so the font looks very static. Maybe if you found a more modern or organic font, it would accent the work better. You'd have to be careful in choosing one, though, because many of them are illegible. And illegibility tends to damper comic enjoyment.
khiton-
Most of what your saying I totally jive with, I think society should look at an individual for who they are on an emotional and intellectual level and not just chalk up so much to visual appearance and adhering to stereo types. I guess where it gets nutty is the perception of what is an appropriate image to idolize. I'm guessing there's a large fan base of female Wonder Woman fans that would pale at the idea of her fighting crime in a respectable red, blue, and gold pant suit and love the fact that shes basically running around half naked. But on the other side of the coin, I'm guessing her crazy amazonian "onezie" and knee high red boots could totally offend someone as well. She's basically running around in her underwear too, but I think the morals she stands for are solid. Can you just judge a female character on her fashion alone?
-
buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut.......I was just driving around in traffic and I thought about what you said. A huge part of telling a story is the "telling" without it you'd basically be saying something to no one, and if the reader/listener isn't allowed to deam what they like or dislike then who is?
-
I guess when it all boils down, you have every right to be offended by the Wardens under panted shenanigans, and Spence has every right to draw them.
-
different strokes for different folks
-soup
Spencer-Thank you for the respectful comment, it makes me respect you. Good luck with your entry.
----
Soup-*sigh*
What can I say to that?
I was talking about real women, respectable women. Not model/media chicks.
Thank you, to everyone who has check out Non-Exertus 12 so far! We appreciate it!!!!!
Khiton- I'm sorry my comic and comments offend you.
Just a little background on me. I'm 33 years old, a father of 4 girls, who my wife and I are raising into strong independent women. I write, draw and read comics at 33 because I'm still a boy at heart. I do this because its fun and I love it. The genre of this book, as most of my art, is based on what I enjoy!!!
khiton-as a guy that loves bloody gore, hoverboards, and panties I say thank you
-
Interesting take on women not wanting to be sexual objects, the other day I was looking at one of my fiances fashion magazines and the amount of suggestive poses and staggering shot gun blasts of cleavage basically melted my mind(in a bad way). Interesting that none of these adds applauded the female target audience for having a strong character or independent mindset, rather how much crap can you pointlessly waste your money on so that strong jawed chisel abbed hordes of men will throw themselves at your feet.
-
Did you really read the story at all or just decided to hate it right of the bat? The alien girl and the warden are the only characters that form any kind of sane collective thought process in the world that exists in the comic. The strike team that gets ripped to shreds isn't going on much and the two guys are basically two blocks of angry muscle with guns. If anything Spence tried to paint a world where women call the shots, yeah their in panties and tank tops, but they make things happen.
-soup
ps-in no way are any of the rantings I just threw down supported by Spence, I'm just the crazy monkey he called up to help color in his art.
pps-thanks to the people that gave us props, and the people who gave us criticisms as well, the props keep you going and the crits help you shape your future works.
crackwalker, I'm glad you liked the artwork! and I'm sorry you didn't like our boys. When I created Wade and Merit,my goal was to give them a big brother/ little brother bond. I love drawing them and think they are characters people can relate to. Who hasn't felt like the big brother or little brother at some point. Of course, we don't run around with no shirts, wearing crazy masks and jump from planes on hoverboards to fight aliens, but thats why I love comics. Thanks for reading and I hope ours boys get a chance to grow on you!!!!!
"Caanan- Thanks and my only reason is why not, I mean in perfect world wouldn't all hottie alien hunters run around in their undies."
-----
In your "perfect" world maybe, but have you ever considered that girls don't always want to be sexual objects to guys and be real characters instead?
-----
Also, I agree about the word ballons not going with the style. The stark white outline is too much contrast compared to the rest of the art and the font seems awkward as well.
-----
As far as the storyline, it seems like you've put all your effort into sensory appeal. Bloody gore, hoverboards, panties, two guys making "your mom" jokes- all of this is rather boyish. Also, they are dealing with horrendous and callous murder and they treat it like a video game. I think this is perfect for a certain genre of people whose world consists of enjoying video games, hotties, and watching people being dismembered.
-----
This comic appeals to me in no way whatsoever.
The black word balloons are distracting - at first I thought they were aliens or vampires or something... it turns out one of them was, but the word balloons had nothing to do with it.
Gorgeous artwork - really fun and energetic. I found the 'hey dude' routine a bit tiresome from the two masked gun heroes... I was hoping they'd get serious when they jumped out of the plane to go on the mission, but they were still carrying on like stoned teenagers.
Hi. You may of read my mini-reviews on my blog, but I'd like to conduct interviews with all of this month's Zuda creators through a series of e-mails (as so it wouldn't be the same interviews over and over again, I don't want to step on Zuda Fan's shtick or anything) over a course of time. Ultimately to be put up on my blog. If you are interested: bryymiller@gmail.com
Awesome colors.
The art has improved since last we saw it, and the coloring looks great. Unfortunately, I sometimes had a little trouble following the story.
Thank you, Quasilucid
Beautiful art. Really dig the depth of field on screen two. Nice. Good luck!
Thanks Infernalbbg!!!
